How do I create a topology to structure alarm groups effectively?
This guide explains working with alarm groups in the topology: Building the hierarchy, device overview, arming/disarming, filters, context menus and configuration.
Requirements
- Permissions in the user group:
- KentixONE system is running stable and devices are accessible
- Access to the KentixONE web interface
- User has permissions
Overview
In the topology, you organize your infrastructure in a clear hierarchy (e.g. location → building → floor → room). Access the device overview via the group name, and use the lock icon to arm/disarm. Filters, context menu and the gear icon help with searching, managing and configuration.
Step-by-step Guide
1. Understanding and Navigating Structure
Structuring alarm groups
- Create your alarm groups spatially or logically structured. Example: Location → Building → Floor → Room.
Adding subgroups
- Open the context menu (⋮) next to an existing group.
- Select "Add subgroup" and assign an appropriate name.
- In the same context menu, you can arrange subgroups.
Expanding and collapsing groups
- Click the arrow left of the group title to show or hide subgroups.
Understanding main group
- The main group shows an overview of all devices in the subgroups.
- Important: Devices can only be assigned to subgroups, not directly to the main group.
Moving device to another group
- Open the context menu (⋮) on the device and select "Edit".
- Choose the desired subgroup in the "Parent alarm group" field.
Deleting alarm group
- Only possible if no devices remain in the alarm group and/or subgroup.
Save and synchronize changes.
2. Understanding Status Indicators
- Number of pending alarms
- Number of pending warnings
- Number of disabled devices
3. Filters and Views
- Device type filter: Funnel icon in top right toggles device groups.
- Switch to graphical view via the map icon.
4. Alarm Group Context Menu
- Open the context menu (⋮) via three dots in the title:
- Add subgroup
- Arrange subgroups
- Show OID list (helpful for SNMP/integrations)
- Delete - only possible if the alarm group contains no devices!
Only alarm groups without assigned devices can be deleted.
Plan the structure in advance: Location → Building → Floor → Room. Moving/assigning devices will be faster later.
5. Opening Configuration
- Click the gear icon in the group title to open the configuration.
- Detailed field descriptions can be found here: Alarm Group Configuration Mask.
Tips & Tricks
- Moving device to another alarm group: Edit device (⋮) and select parent alarm group.
- Sort subgroups: Context menu (⋮) → "Arrange subgroups".
- Arm/Disarm: Red lock = not armed, yellow lock = partially armed, green lock = armed.
Troubleshooting
- "Delete" menu item is grayed out: Devices still exist in the group or subgroups contain devices.
- Lock cannot be operated: Missing permissions for arming/disarming.
- Devices missing in overview: Check filters (device type filter top right) and assignment to selected subgroup.
Glossary
- Topology: Hierarchical unit for organization.
- Arm/Disarm: Operating state of an alarm group; controls whether arm-active alarms are triggered.
- OID List: Overview of relevant SNMP identifiers for integration into monitoring systems.
