Data Connection

In the Data Connection section, you configure the redundant mobile connection for KentixONE. If the internet connection via the network fails, a data connection can automatically be established through the integrated GSM modem. This ensures that critical cloud services and notification functions remain available.

The redundant mobile data connection is only available on Kentix SiteManagers. AlarmManagers do not support this feature.

Requirements​

The following requirements must be met to operate the redundant mobile data connection:

  • Kentix SiteManager
  • Activated mobile function
  • Functional SIM card
  • Active data plan
  • Successful registration in the mobile network
  • Adequate signal strength
  • Correct APN configuration, if required by the provider

Functionality​

KentixONE monitors the accessibility of the internet through the wired network connection.

If a failure is detected:

  1. The GSM modem automatically establishes a mobile data connection.
  2. Cloud-based services remain accessible.
  3. Push notifications can still be delivered.
  4. Emails via KentixONE Online Services can still be sent.

Once the normal internet connection is available again, the mobile data connection is automatically terminated.

tip

The mobile connection is used exclusively as a backup and is not operated in parallel with the wired connection.

Mobile Data Connection​

Mobile Data Connection Enabled​

Enables the automatic use of the mobile connection as internet redundancy.

After activation, KentixONE continuously monitors the configured internet connection and automatically switches to mobile connection if needed.

warning

To use the data connection, a SIM card with an active data plan is required.

APN Address​

The APN address (Access Point Name) defines the access point of the mobile provider for the data connection.

Configure APN​

Optionally, the mobile provider's APN address can be entered here.

For many mobile contracts, the SIM card automatically receives the required APN from the provider. In this case, the field can remain empty.

Typical examples:

  • internet.telekom
  • web.vodafone.de
  • internet

Whether an APN address is required depends on the mobile contract and provider used.

When is an APN Required?​

Manual configuration is necessary only if the mobile provider does not automatically provide the APN.

In this case, the correct APN data should be requested from the respective mobile provider.

Test Data Connection​

Test Data Connection​

This function can be used to verify if the current APN configuration works and if a mobile data connection can be established.

The test uses the currently saved mobile and APN settings.

The test is solely for verifying the mobile data connection and does not trigger a permanent switch to mobile connection.

Requirements for the Connection Test​

To successfully perform the test, the GSM modem must already be registered in the mobile network.

In the menu Mobile → General, the network information must be successfully displayed:

  • Mobile provider
  • Network type
  • Network registration
  • Signal strength

If network information is unavailable or the SIM card is not registered, no data connection can be established, and thus no connection test can be performed.

Connection Monitoring​

Connection monitoring in KentixONE detects the failure of the wired internet connection.

For this, defined network targets are regularly checked for reachability.

Monitoring Targets​

Up to three different targets can be entered.

For each target, the following information is stored:

  • Address
  • Port

Examples:

  • 8.8.8.8 Port 443
  • kentix.com Port 443
  • gateway.example.com Port 443

Why Multiple Targets?​

Using multiple targets prevents false triggers.

For instance, if only a single server is monitored and it is temporarily unreachable, an internet outage could be erroneously detected.

By checking multiple independent targets, this risk is significantly reduced.

tip

Use different and reliably reachable targets to improve the detection of an actual internet outage.

warning

If only a single monitoring target is used, the failure of this target might be mistakenly interpreted as an internet outage.

Services​

KentixONE Online Service​

Activates the use of the redundant mobile connection for connecting to the KentixONE Online Services.

During a primary internet connection failure, the following functions can still be used, among others:

  • Push notifications
  • Cloud services
  • Remote access via KentixONE Online Services
  • Cloud-based email delivery

The actual availability of individual services depends on network coverage, the mobile contract, and signal quality.

Without a valid data plan or successful network registration, no redundant internet connection can be established.

warning

When the mobile data connection is established, the default gateway is changed to the mobile connection. This can lead to routing issues.

If the SiteManager is in a routed network, it can still be reached from this network. This means that the satellites can still send their measurement tickets to the SiteManager.

However, the SiteManager cannot reach devices outside its own network, as the traffic is routed via the default gateway of the mobile connection. This means, for example, that the SiteManager cannot send new configurations or signals to satellites outside its network.
