How do I make the KentixONE access control system failsafe?
This guide shows proven steps to make KentixONE SmartAccess more robust against power or network outages.
Prerequisites
- KentixONE runs stable (access to web interface)
- User with administrator rights
- Hardware access to DoorLocks or rack locks
- Suitable UPS (for PoE switch/AccessManager)
Overview
The following measures increase the failsafe operation of your access control system:
- Set up emergency access in KentixONE
- Supply Kentix system with UPS
- Provide backup power for RA4 rack locks
We generally recommend ensuring additional mechanical access to the building. This allows access even during power/network outages or empty DoorLock battery.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Set up emergency access in KentixONE
- Log in as admin to KentixONE.
- Open User Management → Users and select the desired user.
- Make sure a transponder ID (RFID) is assigned to the user.
- Enable the "Emergency Access" option and save.
- Synchronize the system
- The user should now perform successful bookings at the respective DoorLocks.
- Test emergency access by disconnecting the AccessManager from PoE.
When does "Emergency Access" take effect? When the AccessManager that the DoorLock is paired with has no PoE supply and cannot establish a connection to the DoorLock. Emergency access does not work if the DoorLock battery is empty.
Perform successful bookings with the affected RFID token at all relevant DoorLocks in advance.
An emergency booking does not appear in the logbook.
2. Supply Kentix system with UPS
Kentix devices are usually powered via PoE. To extend operation during power outages, connect the PoE switch to a UPS. Size the UPS according to the power consumption of all connected devices (switch, AccessManager, cameras if applicable).
3. Provide backup power for RA4 rack locks
RA4 rack locks are connected via the KXP-2-RS (AccessManager bus) and integrated in the Kentix system. To enable opening during power outages:
- Use the RA4 adapter with the two terminals (+/-) for external power supply.
- Feed this external supply through a UPS so that the rack locks remain powered and can be unlocked during power outages.
Tips & Tricks
- Test emergency access regularly.
- Grant emergency access carefully and only to selected persons.
Troubleshooting
- Is the UPS correctly connected and adequately sized?
- Do I lack permission to edit users?
- Emergency access not working? Check battery status on DoorLock and whether bookings were made with the token in advance.
